I excitedly started my life in the medical field, wanting to help out mankind. How wonderful it would be! What a difference I could make! After 20 years in various positions, some of which have gone by the way of the dinosaur, I came to realize that I wasn't helping anyone, but helping institutions make a profit.
Along the way, I realized I enjoyed cleaning and organizing. Some people find shopping an adrenaline rush.... I get the same rush out of organizing things to make life easier. Along the way I also had 4 kids, so there was plenty of opportunities to clean and organize. I was the mom counting the Polly Pocket and Barbie shoes so they didn't get lost.
I experimented in this new line of work. I found out I had a totally different perspective and finally had purpose in life again. I WAS making a difference. It is intensely gratifying to see people not in tears as their things leave, but to realize that their things.. and their lives.. still have meaning to someone . What holds people back from moving? The thought of their entire lives being shoved in a box or a dumpster. It is like saying to them, you are worthless. But, I was hesitant to go whole hog. A sudden layoff gave me the opportunity to to explore this new career.
This business has evolved since the original vision. We are a frequent provider for the Washington County Aging and Disability Resource Center and Adult Protective Services. An often requested service is our detail cleaning for home sellers; even a house that is not so great can sell fast if it is detail cleaned. We can pick up a few items, or an entire house; and try to find new homes for as much as possible. We are pretty creative; scrap wood can often be used to heat a home, feather dusters go to the bird rescue where they are used to make nests for recovering birds, and 4-H gets old trophies to remake. We work hard to not waste things.
